Radish Kids

Create your own "radish kid" as you grow your own radishes!

basket of produce from edible garden

Recommended for early learners & Grades Pre-K - 5

In partnership with GrowingGreat Veggies & Fruits, A National STEM Education Program

Overview

In this activity, you can create your own "radish kid" as you grow your own radishes!

Materials

  • Clear, plastic cup
  • Markers
  • Stickers
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Potting soil
  • Radish seeds
  • Ruler
  • Water
  • Small plate

Instructions

  1. Have an adult poke a hole in the bottom of the cup.
  2. Decorate your cup with a nose, mouth and eyes, either stickers or cut from construction paper.
  3. Fill the cup 3⁄4 full with soil and add 4 radish seeds, covered with 1⁄2 inch of soil. Water the seeds and put your Radish Kid on a small plate in a sunny place.
  4. Check your Radish Kid daily to watch the “hair” grow and keep the soil moist.
  5. In a few weeks, a radish root will grow in the soil. If you transplant it outdoors, it will grow big enough to eat!

Wonder...

  • What does a plant need to grow?
  • What parts of the plant can you see above and below the soil?
  • What foods do you eat that grow in the ground?
  • Can you think of the names of some vegetables and fruits?
